چکیده

The social psychologists Fritz Heider and Marianne Simmel have shown in the 1950s that movies about very simple object interactions are typically interpreted in a very social manner, quickly perceiving motivations and emotions. We have developed a tool to generate Heider-Simmel-like videos. In contrast to the Heider-Simmel Interactive Theater project by Andrew Gordon and colleagues, though, our tool enables the generation of story-lines. The user is offered a manifold of individual object behaviors, such as approaching, avoiding, or circling around another object, and a manifold of perceptual events, such as the detection of another object, the touch of another object, etc. Behavior-event complexes can be chosen and concatenated by an intuitive user interface. The resulting story lines are then played-out by the tool in different scenarios, yielding different videos about socially similar interactions. The tool may be very useful for conducting future socialand object-interaction-related cognitive science projects.

An Authoring Tool for Movies in the Style of Heider and Simmel

Seventy years ago, psychologists Fritz Heider and Marianne Simmel described an influential study of the perception of intention, where a simple movie of animated geometric shapes evoked in their subjects rich narrative interpretations involving their psychology and social relationships. In this paper, we describe the Heider-Simmel Interactive Theater, a web application that allows authors to cr...

The perceived intentionality of groups.

Heider and Simmel [Heider, F., Simmel, M., 1944. An experimental study of apparent behavior. American Journal of Psychology 57, 243-259] found that people spontaneously describe depictions of simple moving objects in terms of purposeful and intentional action. Not all intentional beings are objects, however, and people often attribute purposeful activity to non-object individuals such as countr...

Heider vs Simmel: Emergent Features in Dynamic Structures

Heider’s balance theory has been a cornerstone of structural explanations and explorations of network dynamics. Most frequently, Heider’s theory is interpreted as inducing reciprocated and transitive ties among nodes in a graph. Empirical work consistently shows that these structural features (reciprocity and transitivity) occur in naturally emergent networks more often than we would expect und...

Tackling Benchmark Problems of Commonsense Reasoning

There is increasing interest in the field of automated commonsense reasoning to find real world benchmarks to challenge and to further develop reasoning systems. One interesting example is the Triangle Choice of Plausible Alternatives (Triangle-COPA), which is a set of problems presented in first-order logic. The setting of these problems stems from the famous Heider-Simmel film used in early e...
